These compounds have the ability to attack the first decomposition products of an oil are peroxides, which the group of oxides have more oxygen and thus prolong oil life. The most commonly used are: 2, 6 di-tertiary-butyl-para-cresol and 2,6-di-tertiary-butyl-phenol. The methods used for quantification are by infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography.
